The Medieval Japanese hand scroll, known as Animal Giga (Chōjū-giga), is an invaluable artifact that showcases a unique blend of artistry and humor. Often regarded as the precursor to modern manga, its imagery presents a captivating narrative through the whimsical interactions of anthropomorphized animals.

The “Chōjū Giga (Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga / Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans)” consists of four distinct scrolls, crafted in ink on paper during the mid-12th century. This application features the two most renowned scrolls from the collection.

 <li>Scroll One (Kō): Measuring 31.1cm × 11.5m (12.2in × 38ft), this scroll is particularly celebrated for its diverse array of animal caricatures, each vividly conveying personality and charm.</li>
 <li>Scroll Two (Otsu): At 31.1cm × 12.2m (12.2in × 40ft), this scroll includes a captivating assortment of both real and mythical creatures, painting a vibrant picture of the era's imagination.</li>

Although the individual scenes may lack coherent narratives and exhibit some disarray due to the passage of time, the dynamic energy and graceful brushwork remain strikingly intact, offering viewers a glimpse into the artistry of medieval Japan.
