The Medieval Japanese hand scroll, known as Animal Giga (Chōjū-giga), is an invaluable artifact that showcases a unique blend of artistry and humor. Often regarded as the precursor to modern manga, its imagery presents a captivating narrative through the whimsical interactions of anthropomorphized animals.

The “Chōjū Giga (Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga / Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans)” consists of four distinct scrolls, crafted in ink on paper during the mid-12th century. This application features the two most renowned scrolls from the collection.

Although the individual scenes may lack coherent narratives and exhibit some disarray due to the passage of time, the dynamic energy and graceful brushwork remain strikingly intact, offering viewers a glimpse into the artistry of medieval Japan.
